Hi everyone,
While the inaugural issue of the Three Sisters Nutrition newsletter will be coming out sometime next week, I'll also be sending out a bite-sized news digest every Friday. Just a few food-oriented current events you might want to chew over...yes, I said it. Let me know what you think, and see you next week!
In health,
Stephanie
  • WASTE NOT, WANT NOT: In response to those who claim we don’t have enough food to feed the world, I submit this article on food waste in the USA and UK. Apparently just 1/4 of the food we throw away would be sufficient to keep the rest of the Earth’s population from going hungry. Having worked in restaurants in the past,  I’ve seen first hand how much food is left on plates and subsequently thrown away – often due to the excessive portion sizes! You can reduce waste in your own home by buying only what you need and thinking creatively about how to use  leftovers. http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2009/sep/08/food-waste
  • LIVE UP TO YOUR IMAGE, WHOLE FOODS: As we all know, John Mackey, CEO of Whole Foods, has recently developed a severe case of foot in mouth disease.  For instance, he has announced that WF are purveyors of junk food,  revealed that their 365 brands need to be tested for GMO contamination, and stated that he doesn’t believe all Americans deserve access to subsidized health care or unionization.  In a beautifully crafted letter, The Organic Consumers Association calls out Whole Foods on their half-arsed commitment to organics and their shifty marketing tactics, and challenges WF to step up to the plate.  So to speak.  http://www.organicconsumers.org/articles/article_19057.cfm
  • SO HOW LOCAL IS LOCAL? The newest phenomenon in advertising, “localwashing”, would be hilarious if it weren’t so sad. Check out this medeley of corporate giants such as Hellmans and Citgo who are claiming to be your  good ol’ mom and pop store. Even Starbucks is getting in on the game, creating funky and unique looking coffee shops with deceptive names. This is all too confusing. http://www.grist.org/article/2009-09-04-in-pictures-a-tour-of-corporate-localwashing/P1
